ABACUS – PART III

Abacus is an earliest gadget used for calculations. Abacus was in use in Europe, China and Russia, centuries before the implementation of the written Hindu–Arabic number system. It comes in different designs.

An abacus instrument allows performing basic operations like Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. It can also carry out operations such as counting up to decimal places, calculate sums having negative numbers etc.

It comprises of a rectangular frame holding a number of vertically arranged rods, on which beads slides up and down.

Calculations based on abacus was invented during ancient times and now widely used a brain development programme.

Abacus a brain gym method. Abacus instrument has lower beads and upper beads. Calculations are based on the bead movements. We use the left hand and right hand in calculations. This helps in left right brain coordination, stimulates the brain cells and improves concentration.

It is used to do maths calculations faster than a calculator. Abacus is an excellent skill to learn mental maths for calculations and improve the speed in calculations. The student listens to the dictated question and calculates it in mind, uses the finger method in abacus and says the answer within seconds.

Abacus classes prove very helpful for kids as they learn concepts of Math as they play. Abacus helps the kids in a lot of ways. Abacus proves to be a handy tool to help kids with the problem of the boredom of uninteresting and dry matter.

 Its benefits are:

  1. Faster and accurate calculations:
  2. Abacus results in boosting the confidence of the kids in their class.
  3. Proper development of the brain: It results in both sides of the brain’s use since both hands are used simultaneously for calculations using beads. This brain development helps the kids in their problem-solving aptitude.
  4. Increased photographic memory: Colourful beads, strings, etc. help the kids visualize problems with the help of picturization. This visualization helps the kids to recognize different concepts apart from math.
  5. Abacus or mental training is an important tool in the development of a child’s cognitive abilities. It provides a fun and interactive way for kids to learn basic math concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Best Age to Learn Abacus:

What age is best for introducing the kids to abacus or any other special mental training? The answer depends on the individual child’s development and capabilities. Experts are of the opinion that children as young as 4 can benefit from this type of learning.

Abacus learning has been used for centuries as a way to help children learn mathematics and develop their brain power. It is now gaining popularity among modern parents who are seeking ways to give their kids an advantage in math and cognitive development.

Abacus learning can help kids develop better problem-solving skills, improve their concentration, and even increase their mental arithmetic abilities. As such, more and more parents are turning to abacus learning as a way to give their children an advantage in school life.

I will just give you an example below in a decimal abacus :

Please imagine that the following dots are beads:

……… .

……. …

….. …..

… …….

I have written above, 1,357.

If you want to minus 357 from the above, move the beads as follows:

……… .

……….

……….

……….

The answer would be 1000

 CONCLUSION:

Abacus is a brain gym tool. It is very useful in sharpening the brain skills. It improves concentration, memory power and also skills like visualization, memorizing and recalling, which is the outcome of Abacus training, adds to enhanced problem solving abilities. Abacus is a good brain game.

Definitely Abacus classes will help every student. Mathematics is universal. Learning math is not just for the curriculum’s sake. Math has an important role in everyone’s life. Abacus method makes math learning easy. You need to spend 30 minutes a day to practice abacus to become an expert.
