VIVA- VOCE – PART IV

Viva voce pronounced as [ VIEVA VOCHE] is derived from the Medieval Latin, where it is interpreted literally as “with the living voice.”

English Viva Voce is an excellent communication tool to communicate in Spoken English fluently. As second language learners of English, who are non- native English speakers, the fluency in spoken English is one of the greatest hindrances.

The reason behind all of this is our own thought process. Everyone is comfortable in their mother tongue right from their birth. Students starts learning English once they enter the school. Every language except our mother tongue needs to be learned explicitly. And it is seen that everything that we learn, we are quite cautious to apply it in our lives. The same process goes with English and as a result we face a lot of difficulty in speaking this language.

So, what does Viva Voce Courses in schools do?

  1. The First step: They teach us to get rid of our difficulty of being hesitant. They teach us to stop being scared and afraid of being mocked if we speak wrong sentences.
  2. The Second step: You must have heard the phrase that ‘Practice makes a man perfect’. So, Viva classes are full of English conversation starting from two letters to sentence formations in a fun manner.
  3. The Viva Classes teaches us to insert phrases and idioms in our everyday sentences, develop stories, picture talk, Filling in the words, sentence completion, formation of small articles based on topics and of course, basic sentence pattern and grammar.
  4. It also talks you through English movies, newspapers and books to improve on your fluency.

Viva – Voce can be an alternative to Physical or Virtual Language labs which are developed at a very high cost but hardly provide the required inputs and results to develop the communication skills of children.

To speak advanced English, one should be familiar with various real-life situations and understand how a native English speaker deals with the same situations.

  1. Watch, Pause, Repeat – For instance, I regularly watch Suits, An American television show. The show is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime. It is one of my personal favorites. Watch an episode, watch it again, start practising the dialogues with them. When Harvey Spector, the lead actor of the series says “Life is this and I like this,” repeat after him.
  2. Practice; There are people who complain that “I know how to call a cab but when it comes to doing it practically, I fail miserably.” Many of you know what to speak but you fail because you have never heard yourself speaking English aloud to a stranger. You might have visualised having a conversation in your mind, but that doesn’t help, because you haven’t heard your voice at least for once in a different language. Stand in-front of a mirror and practice speaking.
  3. New vocabulary; When you encounter a new word, just don’t stop at learning just the meaning. Go beyond, and look for sentences and instances where the word is used. Pronunciation is equally important. Learn how to pronounce your new word properly.
  4.  Continue even if you fail at first: Make the mistakes fast and take steps to correct it.

Some of the most common Viva – Voce activities are:

  • Pronunciation
  • Model Imitation (students listen to and repeat a model track to practice the stress, rhythm and intonation of a target language)
  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading practice
  • Vocabulary test
  • Group and pair discussion
  • Examinations and oral language assessments.

Viva Voce enables teachers to easily integrate text, images, audio, video and other multimedia content into their teaching materials and share them with their students.

Helps students to record their own voice and play back the recordings as well as holding conversations with other students and educators.

Supports educators to control students and keep track of their progress.

Allows students to independently access teaching materials.

Kofalt Global has introduced novel Viva Voce structured programmes which can be an alternative to expensive physical and virtual language laboratories, and at the same time be more effective in imparting English-speaking skills to the young learners.

There are four levels for Blossoms/ Beginners or Learners according to the standards through Smart Boards.
