We need to understand the literal meaning of Sanatan. Sana actually means that it is without a beginning and Tana means it has no end. Therefore, Sanatan means which is everlasting and unending.
Sanatan is the Dharma that comes from involvement and understanding of the humankind. We can say that it derives from the ancient understanding of people of Bharat from the period of the primeval Vedic way of life.
What was this Vedic way of Life?
We can call it the period of enactment of the applied mystical knowledge into the daily life of people and civilization. When the human religiousness was neither based on philosophy nor faith. It was the period when we did not see virtue as a lawful term but it was pragmatic realism. Here practical divine insight was not an unusual, select or occasional wonder but a marvel logically linked with the social strategies, finances, ethos, and tutoring. This time can be understood as a time when the self-esteem of anthropological life was an unavoidable essential of human devoutness.
We should remember that the Indian divine legacy would not have been possible for surviving for such a long endurance without having humanistic roots of the ancient Vedic way of life.
As quoted by great personalities ……… Quote —-
“After a study of some forty years and more of the great religions of the world, I find none so perfect, none so scientific, none so philosophical and none so spiritual than the great religion known by the name of Hinduism.”–Annie Wood Besant
“That which we call the Hindu religion is really the eternal religion because it embraces all others.”–Sri Aurobindo

After seeing the numerable deities, I used to wonder whether Hinduism is one religion or a group of many religions?
I understood that Hinduism is a way of life and every Hindu is a seeker of the Eternal Truth in an impartial and detached way. A Hindu is one who believes that his ultimate goal is to become one with God and he is an individual soul who is on earth as a part of a heavenly production and God’s Leela.
Sanatan Dharma advanced over a period of time into a multifaceted set of spiritual ethnicities establishing what we understand today as Hinduism. This problematic situation is heightened by the fact that some of these ethnicities challenge each other. It many a times looks as if they belong to diverse spiritual societies.
But a true Sanatani Hindu accomplishes to accept this illogicality with detachment as it is deep-seated in their understanding that all this illogicality is also part of God’s Leela and they happen because God in his everlasting knowledge has arranged for unrestricted determination and liberty to each specific individual to purse truth in the manner that suits his or her personality.
We cannot there fore in any way define Hinduism in any manner but we can identify certain principles and practices which sets it apart from other religions.
1] Hinduism is of the belief that God is ONE as well as many. Every Hindu who takes birth proceeds on his journey to become one with the Eternal as a progression of creation.
2] Hindus believe that the basic purpose of Human beings is to realize their divine nature.
3] Ego is the origin of all grief. An individual can escape grief by letting go of his self-centred nature and recognizing his unbounded internal identity.
4] Hinduism trusts without question that the world is nothing but Maya or illusion. The main cause of Birth and Death is attachment and when a person overcomes this attachment with detachment, he will attain self- realization.
5] Hinduism believes in reincarnation or rebirth. Every individual has to take birth multiple times because of his unawareness before he attains release from this cycle.
6] Sanatanis believe in the perception of avatar of God. God is a lively and energetic belief, who takes birth into the earth’s awareness unswervingly and adopts human form to defend the feeble and reinstate order in the creation.
7]Sanatan Dharma believes in the notion of Karma. It is said that all actions produce either constructive or adverse responses and effect our lives. If you do good Karma, you will reap positive results and if your Karma is bad, you will reap negative results. Also, it is perceived that your good and bad karma both will surely affect your next birth in different forms.
8] Hinduism allows its followers to select their own path without compulsion of faith externally. It believes that each individual will follow the righteous path of God through inner progression and believes in the maxim off following own self, living according to one’s belief in Dharma and discovering the Eternal Truth by being in harmony with one’s own self and that of others.
9] Lastly Sanatan Dharma does not believe in altering people’s faith by bribes or in any other way. If anybody wants to change his religion that should be his own innermost choice. No other religion or anybody has the right to force or put him under any type of temptation to change his religion.
10] According to Sanatan Dharma Hinduism shows the way to live your life. It firmly believes that there are innumerable ways to approach God and you may choose any path to become one with the Almighty.
We can sum up Sanatani way of Life or Hinduism in the following points: –
It is all-comprehensive; in other words, it covers every aspect of human life from birth till death.
It is a detailed display of the avaricious world and beautifully explains the variance between spirit and matter.
It is universal and unending and relevant. It will always exist.
It is Varna specific in the sense that it recognizes different categories of Human nature and rules and duties are allocated as per the person’s profession.
It is practical and not limited to a selected few. It is non- factional and can be applied by anyone because it is practical in the sense that it has the dimensions to produce results reliably and recurrently when applied.
It is open-minded, giving respect to all other religions, and all – encompassing due to its Monotheistic, polytheistic, objective, atheistic nature and therefore it is exceptional.
Sanatan Dharma can be taken up by any individual, whether he is a genius or a normal human being or a challenged individual, at their own pace and can progress towards their ultimate goal. That is why we say it is inspiring and homogenous because it is a combination of philosophy, yoga, religious rites and daily activities packed into a comprehensive package.
I end by saying that those who say one day Sanatan Dharma will end, it is their falsehood and wishful thinking as it is immortal in nature. It sums up all the available useful knowledge. It only requires the code of morality and ethics for a successful and prosperous society. It is eco-friendly in nature, believes is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and respects all other Life – forms.
Thus, I end by saying again that Sanatana Dharma is all about revering the principles behind every idol we pray to. And most importantly again I reiterate that Sanatana Dharma is not essentially a faith but a means to live a Life of harmony, peace and happiness!
