What is Quality School Culture-
Teachers and school strengthen one’s whole life. Our way of accepted wisdom, rational analysis, community traditions, interpretation, philosophy ….is developed by our school culture and Teachers.
They can manipulate our way of opinion. In short we can say a person is the creation of schooling to a great extent.
An improved word for school culture is by and large the optimistic ambience of a school.
Positive School Culture-
A positive school culture corresponds with the worth of all the members and superiority of their efforts. A positive school culture totally increases the value of teaching learning process.
Cheering the students is the answer to optimistic school culture. Support leads towards self-confidence and enhanced presentation of the students. Whenever your students attain something, be it big or small, you need to celebrate.
Only imparting bookish knowledge is not enough. It is significant to educate and make them understand the community skills that will make them superior adults in their lives. For developing a positive school culture, it is significant to instill the community principles e.g. respect, love, compassion, and benevolence – in other words positive social behaviour into the students as well as the staff.
Why Do Language Teachers Teach Culture-
Language teachers teach culture because language and culture are connected. Every child’s mother tongue is ideal for describing the humankind as they observe it. Culture is really the identical thing. It is how we see the planet, how we infer and give significance to what we see around us. So you can’t truly appreciate another language unless you appreciate a good large piece of their traditions and culture as well.
David Bellos wrote a wonderful book called “Is That a Fish in Your Ear”. In it he discusses about the difficulty of translating a scene in a film called “The Great Escape”.
A British soldier, having run away from a German POW camp, was taking a train journey out of the country. His buddy did all the conversation as he spoke German. They effectively bargained the German checkpoints, but as they ascended up on to the train, a German soldier said, in English, “Have a good trip”.
English culture demands that such a wish be reacted to with “Thank you”, which the first soldier did without judgment, and they were both executed. So the words “Have a good trip” and “Thank you” has a cultural meaning over and above the actual words. That’s why language teachers teach culture.
Negative School Culture–
In a negative school culture, the Teacher-Student-Principal-Management dealings are not smooth and full of conflicts. The staff members do not believe in the capability of the students to succeed, and most often perceive a negative attitude towards them. Also they resort to corporal punishments. The Principal and the staff are not on the same wavelength with regards to the school activities. There is lack of honesty and frankness between them. The Management is not responsive and blames the Principal and staff for the problems faced by school and interferes in day to day activities without maintaining hierarchy. There is an environment of fear and lack of freedom of speech. The School displays lack of a clear sense of rationale; has norms that emphasize on sluggishness. The school blames students for lack of advancement, discourages teamwork which often results in actively hostile relations among staff.
School culture has a big impact on students, and that culture is supported by the teachers.
I was the Principal and a teacher in a city school in Thane district, and many of our students come from troubled homes and pasts. My staff and I could help by being a constructive mature authority in their lives. We could sculpt constructive actions and understanding, which helped some very notorious students to make good not only in academics but sports. Here I can tell from experience that teachers can also be a terrible influence by being rigid and not showing thoughtfulness and reliability.
A high-quality teacher is someone who becomes a parent of the student. One should educate, direct and counsel the students in the same way as they would to their own children.
A good teacher is someone who behaves like a student with a student. One need not be stern always. There is a need to come down to their level and understand their mindsets before educating them.
A good teacher has the feature of being unbiased. Every teacher keeps a soft corner towards the cleverest student in the class. This is something I powerfully resist. Our work is also to see that the one who is the most mischievous and least clever gets our full attention to succeed.
A good teacher teaches the student from their point of grasping things.
A good teacher works on the all-round development of the student and does not limit them only to academics.
A good teacher appreciates the efforts of the students irrespective of the quantum of success. This results in enhancement in their performance.
A teacher should make the students appreciate the worth and principle of education rather than just earning marks.
According to Fullan (2007) school culture can be defined as the guiding beliefs and values evident in the way a school operates
Therefore my take on a Positive School Culture is …….
‘Think positive, speak positive and do everything with a positive attitude. All the Best’.
