Should we teach school children how to grow food?
It is an absolute Yes .It is not just because of value based derivatives in getting them to understand where the food on their plate comes from, or the conception that they might apply the skills later in life to their own gardening but because it’s a great way to teach Science.
On the way to growing plants children get to talk about soil, nutrients, water cycles, seeds, germination, and photosynthesis. They get to talk about plant cells and fiber, and a lot of very practical science.
The art of growing food is an amazing way to make science accessible for young children. You could have them grow anything, but growing food stuff and herbs is more enticing.
The children get to build on what they grow. They can grow multiple types of things and talk about how they’re different. They can experiment and see how different conditions impact the food.
It is good science to teach and an engaging way to teach as it has multiple benefits for the students.
So it is absolutely necessary to teach students the process of growing food.
