Need of Civility in Today’s World

Integrity and Civility are very important in today’s Society:

For understanding this concept, we need to analyse the different concepts that moulded our society.

The Social Contact Theory, tells us the idea that, the individual loses some privileges for unvarying, foreseeable community relations that profits everyone. Using the Social Contract as an outline for investigation, we realise that qualities such as integrity and civility are merely community encryptions and procedures that we as a society have agreed are important. Hence integrity and civility are as important as we decide it to be, because we punish those who defy it with disgrace and penalty.

What Is Civility?

The main representation of civility found in many definitions is RESPECT. Civility necessitates pupils to take accountability for their behaviour by reassuring shared respect and the acceptance of the penalties for unsuitable conduct.

Present Society has an inferred model:

Present Society has an implied model of the perfect human being. Usually, it values the ideals of being hard-working, good-mannered, good-looking, inspired to follow their dreams, and has a clear set of ethics and morals that he/she implements. Most people would try to fit in with these canons, and if you don’t, you will be examined on a social basis and in many cases that would delay your advancement in ascending the ladder of society.

For example, if you’re going in for a job interview, and you’re lacking one of these traits, you would obviously be looked down upon and you probably won’t get hired. Or maybe you do get hired, but eventually your societal flaws would catch up to you.

Think about it:

  1. You are not hard-working then you are inept and a waste.
  2. If you are not well-mannered, you will surely be looked down in almost any professional or social setting.
  3. If you are not inspired enough nobody would want a robot that does not want to do anything.
  4. If you do not have good moralities and ethics, you will be seen as a bad person.

Therefore, civility and integrity are the tool-kit and the stimulus for people in society to fit in with society’s moral.

Civility and Students:

Civility is Important for Student Success:

Civility is currently affecting several establishments, including education. Success of students, both academically and professionally, can be improved by civility.

  1. An educational situation that approves common admiration can permit student learning and academic achievement.
  2. Civility can play a key role in the ability of students to get along with classmates and school staff while they chase their educational goals.
  3.  It’s important for teachers to create a learning environment fostering civility so that unsuitable and troublesome student behaviour is minimized or eliminated.

The Teacher is a Role Model for Civility

The Social Learning Theory tells us that students learn by observation. Therefore, it is mandatory for teachers to teach by example which is an effective way to promote civility.  The teachers showing respect to students inclines to endorse shared respect by them. Whether teachers comprehend it or not, they are role replicas for students. Students certainly tend to revere and imitate teachers who transform their lives.

Every communication with students offers teachers with the chance to encourage civility. Students feel better about themselves, fellow students and their teachers when they are treated in a respectful manner.

Teachers need to identify that constructive communications with students are critical to being an effective teacher.  The best teachers will definitely put themselves in the students’ shoes. The first day of class can provide the teachers with occasions to create a positive attitude about the studies and first impression about the teacher.  If teachers show respect to students, they will feel good about themselves, and more relaxed and open to learning.

Conclusion:

Therefore, it is very necessary that teachers create Student Behavioural Expectations. Sometimes students act unsuitably because they are unaware of what is appropriate behaviour pattern. Incivility often grows out of ignorance, not hatred or spite. Students are often clueless about appropriate behaviour. Normally, civility has to be taught in order for students to fully understand and practice it. Teaching or creating awareness of civility can be accomplished by establishing student behavioural expectations and enforcing students learning by observation i.e., the teacher being a role model.

The teacher needs to promote civility in the classroom by starting a “student conduct session” before stating to teach course syllabus. He or She should explain behavioural expectations and consequences for inappropriate behaviour. For proper understanding of students, the teacher also needs to provide instances of inappropriate student behaviours. For example:  Students regularly coming too late to class, students indulging in side-conversations during lectures, inappropriate comments by classmates when other students are asking questions, students reading text messages from their cell phones during class, students reading other hardcopy materials during lectures.

It is also very important for teachers to support behavioural expectations.  Reinforcement increases the prospect of appropriate behaviour being learned. Promotion of a respectful classroom environment, where behaviour accountability is promoted, produces contented, robust and involved students.

If school students are unruly and misbehaved, it is not their fault because understand that we as teachers have somewhere failed to reinforce civility in them at a tender age when actual learning takes place and when they look upon us as role models for their behaviour patterns.

A very good attempt. The unfortunate part in our education system is we hardly get to know the civilizations of the country and encient developed civilizations which is rather a best foundation of civility of any country. Cut throat competitions and fast money making businesses too should not cross the barrier of civility of any country.

Barring few countries, the whole world is facing the far reaching effects of (extreme)civility not being imbibed rightly at right time post WW Two. The nature reminds and send alarms. Civility in all respect if improves, this mother Nature shall bless else…..

Thanks with hope that the teacher, being close contact to children’s take it very seriously and work on it…

I agree with this hypothesis Mam. But these virtues need to be instilled from Home too. Teacher has a crucial role to play but parents/guardian have an equal or more important role to play too.

Pleasant experience reading this article Mam, especially in the times when these virtues are conspicuous in their absence.
