NIAGARA FALLS- THE ESSENTIAL PICTURE

Niagara Falls is the world’s most famous waterfall system. They are 3 waterfalls, the Horseshoe falls on the Canadian side, the American falls on the U.S side and the Bridal veil falls which is the smallest beside the American falls.

FORMATION OF THE NIAGARA FALLS: –

Niagara Falls was created when the enormous glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age nearly 12,000 years ago. When the glaciers melted, huge quantities of water filled the great lakes and eventually flowed towards the Atlantic ocean.

The Niagara River was the outlet which connected Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.
Lake Erie is considered the fourth-largest, great lake in North America and Lake Ontario is the smallest by surface area and most easterly of the five Great Lakes of North America, which is bordered by the Canadian province of Ontario to the north and west and the U.S. state of New York to the south and east.

The Falls: – They originated much further downstream from where they are today. Due to erosion, over thousands of years, the falls moved upstream. The water that flows over Niagara Falls can be regulated partly for hydroelectric power generation, at night and during peak tourist periods. This is the reason why the falls can look different depending on the time and season.

Niagara is not only a natural wonder for the world but an important source of electricity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Name must be taken of Nikola Tesla, whose alternating- current system helped make long distance transmission of hydro- electricity possible.

The indigenous history of Niagara Falls: –

The history of Niagara region is much older.  Its human history surpasses its tourist history.

The name “Niagara” is derived from an Aboriginal Iroquoian word, which traces back to the Seneca word “Ongniaahra” or “Onguiaahra,” meaning “thundering waters” or “point of land cut in two”. [1]

Indigenous History of the Niagara Region

  • Ancient Presence: Archaeological evidence and oral traditions show that Indigenous peoples have lived along the Niagara River corridor for roughly 13,000 years, since the end of the last Ice Age. [1, 2]
  • First Nations: The region has been home to and shaped by multiple nations over millennia, including the Neutral Nation (Attawandaron), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (including the Seneca and Tuscarora nations), and the Anishinaabek, including the Mississaugas of the Credit. [1, 2]
  • Etymology Consensus: A consensus on platforms like Quora notes that early European missionaries and explorers anglicized these Indigenous place names from terms like Onguiaahra into the modern spelling of Niagara. [1]
  • Treaties and Alliances: The Niagara River corridor is tied to important 18th-century treaties between the Crown and First Nations. Indigenous allies also played a vital military role alongside British and Canadian forces to defend Upper Canada during the War of 1812. [1]

Rainbows are very common in the falls:- This happens when sunlight enters the spray and light is refracted, reflected and dispersed by tiny water droplets. Due to production of huge amounts of mist, rainbows are particularly common. You may also see a moonbow – which is a rainbow produced by moonlight rather than sunlight.

Boat trips into the gorge: –

It is one of the most surreal experiences. Niagara City Cruises operate on the Canadian side and Maid of the Mist on the U.S side.

Does Niagara Falls freeze during winter :- Niagara Falls do not completely freeze during winter. When the winter is very severe, ice accumulates around the falls , river and spray, creating spectacular formations. But due to the enormous volume of moving water, the falls continue to flow.

The Bridges :-

The bridges provide spectacular view of the Niagara river. The Rainbow Bridge connects Canada and U.S and famous for its view of the falls.

The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is further upstream. It is a historic double-deck steel arch bridge connecting Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York.

What is Niagara beyond the falls:

I end by saying that-

For many Niagara is not merely a tourist attraction. It is a place to pause and feel grateful when we realize how small we are compared to the enormity of nature. It can have a strangely calming and inspiring effect on one and all. I witnessed the falls both in daylight and at night. I assure you that the two experiences are totally different.

In the words of Winston Churchill while describing the Niagara Parkway – “ the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world”.
